Why Offset Carbon? And Equally Important: How?

Why Offset Carbon? And Equally Important: How?

The emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon and methane occurs mainly through the industrial production chain, the burning of fossil fuels to generate electricity, and power means of transport. These gases spread in the atmosphere and cause damage to the planet. One example is the loss of forest and marine biodiversity from soil and ocean acidification.

Here at Simple Organic, we have a commitment to sustainability with you and the planet. That's why we developed a full-fledged carbon offset plan, and we will share all about it with you. Scroll down to learn more!

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO OFFSET CARBON?

As mentioned above, our everyday actions and needs emit carbon dioxide (CO2). Neutralizing it is a way to compensate for the volume of emitted gas by taking specific measures. An increasingly popular method is the support for forestry projects. Investments in renewable energy or energy efficiency technology are also common ways to offset carbon.

WHY NEUTRALIZE CO2 EMISSIONS?

By neutralizing carbon, we contribute to reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by preserving our fauna and flora, thus mitigating the cause of climate change.

THE BENEFITS OF CARBON OFFSET
  • Improvement in soil fertility;
  • Promotion of a healthy hydrological cycle;
  • Generation of multiple sources of food, fuel, and fiber production;
  • Improvement of air quality and consequently reduction of respiratory diseases.
CALCULATING THE NEUTRALIZATION

The calculation is accomplished based on the GHG Inventory developed by a UN-certified company, in conformity with the methods approved by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). See also the GHG Protocol and the Brazilian Climate Change Standard, NBR ISO 14.064.

The first step is to create an inventory using tools that consider emission standards, factors, and predictions. Using this information, we can determine our corporate carbon footprint and how much to compensate for.

In the case of regenerative forestry, the equivalency is 1 ton of emitted CO2 = 7 planted trees. In other words, we need to plant seven trees for each ton of emitted carbon to neutralize the emissions.

BUT WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TREES AND EMITTED CO2?

Trees naturally perform a phenomenon called carbon sink – or carbon sequestration. They absorb the CO2 in the air and store it inside its biomass while releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. The process cleans the air by exchanging a pollutant gas for our much-needed oxygen, thus neutralizing the harmful emissions.

HOW IS CARBON OFFSETTING EXECUTED?

Such initiatives can be accomplished by the regenerative planting of trees or by purchasing carbon credits. Here at Simple, we compensate through regenerative planting in agroforestry regions.

Every single one of these carbon offsetting projects generates a report and a code number with which we can check the planting and growing of the trees. Therefore, every effort is registered and traceable.

AT SIMPLE, WHICH ACTIVITIES ARE NEUTRALIZED?

We are very proud of our carbon offsetting plan. Today, the entire logistics of our production chain has its emissions neutralized. Moreover, all our stores, offices, and trips our team makes are carbon neutral.

TIM MUSIC RIO + NEW YORK & LONDON FASHION WEEKS
PRESENTED BY SIMPLE ORGANIC, THE "BRAZIL: CREATING FASHION FOR TOMORROW" EXHIBITION KICKED OFF THE OFFICIAL LONDON FASHION WEEK SPRING SUMMER 2024 SCHEDULE

In early 2023, we innovated once more. We sponsored the carbon offsetting of an event, the Tim Music Rio, Brazil's largest free music festival, which took place on the world-famous Copacabana beach.

Hoping to take our purpose and positive impact further, both literally and figuratively, we went on to neutralize the CO2 emissions of PatBo's runway show, part of New York Fashion Week SS24. Soon after, we did the same for the event that kicked off London Fashion Week: the Brazil: Creating Fashion For Tomorrow exhibition, which focused on sustainable solutions in the fashion world.

YOU ARE PART OF THIS PROCESS

Talking about these necessary actions is our way to share with you more about our production process and green initiatives, besides bringing awareness to the impact we all constantly have on the planet.
